During the pandemic there were fewer people out and about. This may be a good thing when it comes to reducing the spread of the virus but it is not so good for the owners of small pet shops. As people were less likely to go out, they tended to order pet food online or include it in their weekly supermarket shopping. The income of smaller pet shops was 30% less compared to the previous year. Larger pet shops, on the other hand, experienced a significant increase in sales and often had to order new stock multiple times a week. There was also an increase in the sale of small animals such as hamsters, guinea pigs and fish. And apparently, lots of puppies too, since shops were also selling large quantities of puppy food.
