Dam Square in 1656: mirror of the city as marketplace of the world
door Johannes Lingelbach (schilder)
To stimulate creativity during lockdown we organised an online art battle. Between March 16th and May 31st many young people send us videos of their art projects. Spoken word, film projects, singing, dancing, rapping, and other art forms. The winner is: Klaskie with ‘Creepy Calm’. In the video you can see a compilation of the art projects we received.
The battle was judged by director Christiaan Mooij and the Theatre’s CEO Yassine Boussaid. They looked for uniqueness, craftsmanship, and the power of the message. The decision for Klaskie’s work was unanimous.
Quote by the jury: “a very creative and visual stimulating work of art. The imaging, lyrics, and music complement each other well. She worked with the lockdown theme and shows the effect of lockdown on a person through the art. Her creation catches the essence of corona in an abstract way.”
Klaskie won the ‘roll’ of her live (a toilet roll, referencing the shortage of toilet paper at the beginning of lockdown) and a hundred euro’s. The most viewed video was made by Rosa & Friends. They won the audience award.
ABOUT THE LOCKDOWN BATTLE
The idea for the battle came about at the start of the lockdown during the first digital team meeting. We discussed how to stay in contact with our loyal Meervaart Young base. Yearly we organise many art competition, like the Kunstbende Noord-Holland, and dance competition ‘Break A Leg’. Which is why we chose to have a battle.
A competition with the least amount of restrictions possible, because lockdown already has so many rules to adhere to. Not having restrictions gives people the opportunity to show their unbounded creativity in the privacy of their own home. We aimed to initiate a safe space of experimentation for the creators. Art doesn’t have restrictions, but the limit of having to create it at home gives a new creative boost. This battle was one big invitation to have a creative experiment in a locked down situation.
